PROM

PROM, or Programmable Read-Only Memory, is a type of non-volatile computer memory that is programmed by the user after it has been manufactured. PROM is designed to store data permanently and cannot be erased or reprogrammed once it has been programmed.

PROM is created using a process similar to that used to manufacture Mask ROM. However, instead of programming the memory during the manufacturing process, PROM is programmed after it has been manufactured using a device known as a programmer. The programmer applies a voltage to specific areas of the memory to program the memory cells with the desired data.

PROM is commonly used in devices that require permanent storage of data, such as game consoles, medical equipment, and other electronic devices. PROM is ideal for storing critical data, such as system settings, firmware, and other important information that needs to be permanently stored and cannot be changed or updated in the future.

One of the advantages of using PROM is that it provides a cost-effective way to produce non-volatile memory that can store critical data. Because the memory is programmed after it has been manufactured, the cost per unit is relatively low compared to other types of non-volatile memory, such as EEPROM or flash memory.

One of the disadvantages of using PROM is that it cannot be erased or reprogrammed once it has been programmed. This means that any errors or changes that need to be made to the data stored in the memory must be corrected before it is programmed. Additionally, PROM is not suitable for applications that require frequent updates or changes to the data stored in the memory.
